Play Experience Preparation

Print appropriate photos of family members and friends - Cut each photo to fit into a lid - Stick photos using double sided tape (or glue) into recycled lids.

Experience Steps

  1. Have your baby sit on a small play-mat or rug on the floor.
  2. Lay the lids in front of the baby with the photo side up.
  3. Encourage your baby to pick up each lid, one at a time.
  4. Talk to your baby by pointing to the photo in their hand and naming the person.

What to talk about, or questions to ask during the experience

  • Look, who is this?
  • Oh, I see mummy
  • Where is daddy?
  • Is that grandma?
  • Where's your sister?
  • I see your cousin.....
  • There's Aunty.......

Build on this...

  • As babies get older and language increases, they may name the person in the photo.
  • Have duplicates of each photo for a simple matching game.

  1. Children feel safe, secure, and supported
  2. Children develop knowledgeable and confident self identities
  3. Children become strong in their social and emotional wellbeing

EYLF Principle

Principle 1: Secure, respectful and reciprocal relationships. Through a widening network of secure relationships, children develop confidence and feel respected and valued.

EYLF Practice

Practice: Learning through play. Play can expand children’s thinking and enhance their desire to know and to learn. In these ways play can promote positive dispositions towards learning. Children’s immersion in their play illustrates how play enables them to simply enjoy being.
